These are my favorite therapeutic anger control games based on feedback from play therapists, school psychologists, and counselors and from my own experience with the games.
- Angry Animals 2: A Board Game Teaching Healthy Expression of Anger
Ages 5 – 10 (by Creative Therapy Store)
The artwork on the game board is attractive and engaging for younger kids and the three different card decks (Problems/Options, Anger Exercises, and Give Yourself a Pat on the Back) are easy for children to understand and respond to. - Escape From Anger Island
Grades 1 – 5 (by Franklin Learning Systems)
The game format with a dinosaur chasing players around the game board adds a level of excitement and imagination to the game. - Anger Blob Cards
All ages because it uses images instead of prompts (by Speechmark)
I like that these cards present scenarios and are more open-ended. Keep in mind that Speechmark is in the UK so you’ll have to ship it overseas. - Stop That Angry Thought
ages 6 – 12 (by Creative Therapy Store)
This card game teaches a simple, but powerful concept to teach young kids to control anger: picture a stop sign. - Mad Dragon: An Anger Control Card Game
Ages 6 – 12 (by Therapy Game HQ)
I’m more than a little biased since I published this game, but it offers the most effective anger control tips for children, plays like the popular game Uno, and is made with high-quality, durable materials that will make the game last. The game card content is focused on four topics: Taming Your Anger, Avoiding Anger, “When I Control My Anger…”, and Understanding Anger.
A lot of helping professionals are paying for these games out of pocket because of shrinking school budgets so I like to recommend the cards games that typically cost half as much as the board games. Angry Animals 2 and Escape From Anger Island are both fun board games with engaging graphics and have been best-sellers for years.
Tip: if you want a lot of anger control questions and prompts without the price tag try the Anger Control Workbook for $19.95 instead of the Anger Control Game that costs $49.95.
